Summary 

 

Dr. Amir Fijany is currently a Scientific Advisor in the areas of High Performance Computing and Bio-Optical Modeling for Mobile Health Devices at Zyomed Corp. From August 2012 to April 2017, he was the Director of High Performance at Zyomed Corp. From June 2008 to November 2011, he was a Senior Researcher at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the Telerobotics and Applications (TERA) Department. From January 2008 to June 2008, he was an Associate Tech Fellow at the Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC) where he was PI and the Team Lead on the design and development of advanced algorithms and low-power portable supercomputer architecture for real-time video image processing. Before joining NGC, he was a Principal Scientist with and Technical Group Supervisor of the Advanced Computing Algorithms and ISHM Technologies Group at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology. He joined JPL in July 1987 and since February 2000 had been leading the Advanced Computing Algorithms and ISHM Technologies Group. In September 2000, he was promoted to the rank of Principal Scientist at JPL. He received the BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from School of Engineering, University of Tehran, in 1980. He received the D.E.A. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from University of Paris XI (Orsay), France, in 1981 and 1988, respectively. His research activities include Advanced Algorithms and High-Performance Computing, Novel Computing Architectures and Paradigms, Signal and Image Processing, Model-based Diagnosis and Reasoning, Sensors Analysis and Optimization, and Robotics and Multibody Dynamics. His recent works at Zyomed were focused on Massively Parallel Monte Carlo Simulation of Light Propagation in Human tissue, Solution of Inverse Problem to Calculate Bio-Optical Properties of Human Tissue (in Diffuse-Reflectance Mode), and Modeling and Simulation of FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) based Wearable Devices for Non-Invasive Glucose Detection. He has authored/co-authored over 90 articles in archival journals and conference proceedings as well as 5 book chapters. He holds 11 patents on the design of novel computing devices and architectures, signal and image processing, model-based diagnosis, and system structural analysis. He has received over 30 NASA Technical Innovation Awards as well as several other NASA’s awards. He is the coeditor of a book entitled "Parallel Computation Systems for Robotics: Algorithms and Architectures" published by World Scientific Publishing Co., 1992.
